For no reason Casey Anthony’s murder trial became one of those trials constantly talked about, almost on a daily basis, on media and around offices, and clubs and even at sporting events. However, another case which involved bullying of Phoebe resulting in her death almost went unnoticed.
On one hand Casey Anthony’s case involved accusations of one or more several persons involved in causing a wrongful death of Caylee and on the other hand Phoebe’s wrongful death, even though self-inflicted, involved accusations on the bullying students at the school Phoebe went to.
Casey Anthony’s case became a national distraction, not only consuming the time that could have been used for more productive thinking, but wasted time and energy of many law enforcement agencies and the taxpayer’s money and the time consumed by the media in broadcasting it. The only win out of all this could be the proposed Caylee’s law serving some sort of justice to Caylee’s wrongful death.
I am not sure why lies occupy such a center stage when bullying has become a trend at schools from all parts of the nation and should be noticed more. Bullying may be just a tip of the iceberg that we see while all sorts of hassling of students keep going at much lower levels. It was easy for the teens to say that they did not know the problems Phoebe was going through, but did they make any attempts to know the new kid in the block?
This is where we need laws similar to Caylee’s law. It might be easier to subscribe to the fact that we have become a nation of softies while overlooking the cultural differences that might be causing such miseries during the assimilation process. If so, would it not be easier to have a law that helps to protect the students who come from overseas with diverse set of cultures than that exist at the host country to make that assimilation process easier and quicker?
I was drawn to the plight of students since the day I took notice of school violences from the times of the Columbine school tragedy and then to see it happening around the nation – resulting not only in the wrongful death of many innocent lives, but also to cutting short the aspirations of those blossoming souls, thus causing untold misery to friends and parents of those who perished. I just then wondered what the new millennium would hold for the students of the 21st century.
I have had many sleepless nights in trying to find a solution to the distractions resulting in such deplorable acts. After many whys and trying to connect the dots over all these years, I began to see some light. My basis to what I am saying might be ill-equipped with logical reasoning or may not have sufficient proof to nail the points home, but I have decided to give it a try anyway by sharing my thoughts on this blog.
Out of all that churning, the concept of COL took birth in my mind to see whether the distractions caused due to the presence of idle minds can be occupied with something better than what that exists today. More I think of COL, more I am beginning to believe that it will provide a sound platform to structure studies for the kids of the 21st century and enable them to focus on studies rather than occupying their idle minds with distractions. I sincerely hope that it will, not only address the continuous learning issues of the 21st century, but also addresses the ways in which we can minimize or in some cases totally eliminate the distractions at schools.
